This course is the foundation in the A3 (American Avalanche Association) required avalanche education progression. You will learn skills to make informed decisions and how to use local forecasting resources to evaluate snowpack and weather patterns and how to conduct yourself in and around avalanche terrain.

All ULLR courses are based out of Bend with field sessions occuring in Deschutes National Forest. Student/Instructor ratio is 6:1.

Who is ULLR? In Norse mythology, ULLR is the god of skiing and winter. Cold-loving ULLR (pronounced Oool-er) glides over the world and covers the land with snow.

Reviews

"I've participated in several outdoor study and rescue courses, and I can honestly say I gained more practical knowledge from Brad's Level 1 course than any other training I've attended. For anyone venturing into the backcountry, this family-owned Bend business provides essential education delivered with expertise and passion. If you're serious about backcountry safety, don't hesitate to sign up with Ullr Backcountry." -Brian L., ULLR Rec Level 1 & Rescue 2025 "I took Brad's intro to splitboarding class. Brad is a pro! He is fun to be around, extremely experienced and a patient and thorough teacher. Not only did I learn a ton, but I had fun doing it. I'm hooked!" -Tracy B., ULLR Intro to Splitboarding 2025 "Brad put on an excellent AVY1 course. There was a fairly wide range of experience levels in the group, and it was a high value for everyone. Brad did an excellent job of going over materials in the classroom, and then reinforcing our learning out in the field on the same day. I feel like I now have the tools to begin my lifelong learning experience of backcountry travel. I'm looking forward to taking more courses with Brad in the coming years after applying some of the skills I've learned in this class." -Evan W., local guide, ULLR Rec Level 1 & Rescue 2025
